People & Lifestyle

Georgetown has an effortlessly chic air about it. This historic neighborhood is imbued with undeniable charm without feeling outdated, and trendsetters flock to the area, inspired by the immaculate architecture. Georgetown’s walkable streets and to-die-for boutique shopping attract out-of-towners, but the residential side streets remain a solace for those who call Georgetown home.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Georgetown boasts an impressive selection of dining options and cuisines, from corner shop eateries to elegant dining rooms. Because of Georgetown’s location on the banks of the Potomac, upmarket seafood reigns supreme. Sophisticated Sequoia’s floor-to-ceiling windows provide tons of natural light and endless riverfront views, and their decadent menu is equally as elegant. For seafood with an Italian flair, Fiola Mare’s stunning menu also features an extensive wine selection, and Farmers Fishers Bakers puts a farm-fresh spin on local seafood. For dinner alfresco, Cafe Milano’s sidewalk seating and scrumptious bistro fares are unforgettable.

Bright, buzzy Yellow brings a taste of the Levant to Wisconsin Avenue, with specialty lattes, pillowy pastries, bagels with labneh and hearty sandwiches in a sunny, colorful café that’s worth the line. For something sweet, Thomas Sweet has been scooping homemade ice cream on P Street since 1979; build your own banana split or try a seasonal flavor, and stop in late, since it’s open until midnight on weekends.

For a glamorous evening, climb the stairs above The Oak Room to Bernadette’s, an elegant piano bar dressed in deep red and gold, where expertly made cocktails like the smoked old fashioned pair with live music. Or watch the sunset over the city from CUT Above, the rooftop bar at the Rosewood Hotel. For Flemish fare and Belgian brews, head to The Sovereign.

Walking down M Street is perfect for window shopping, grabbing a cup of coffee or ice cream, or getting drinks with friends. Browse preppy, colorful dresses at Tuckernuck’s flagship store, then stop by Manse for curated home decorate. Farther up Wisconsin Avenue, the Book Hill stretch is home to some of Georgetown’s best antique shops, including Pillar & Post, filled with fine English antiques, silver and gifts that feel like a trip to the English countryside

Things to Do

Georgetown’s breathtaking scenery, boutique shopping, and wealth of history means that there is also plenty to do here. Take a sunset walk or a morning jog by the Potomac River at Georgetown Waterfront Park, or get your adrenaline pumping at Key Bridge Boathouse, where you can rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards to travel upriver. The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal is one of the largest remaining intact American canals. The C&O reaches the Potomac here in Georgetown, and trails along the canal make for an excellent afternoon stroll or bike ride.

Wander the grounds of Georgetown University, founded in 1789 as the nation’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit university, where the spires of Healy Hall rise over the front lawn and visitors are welcome to step inside to see its grand Gaston Hall.

For a taste of live jazz music, Blues Alley is Georgetown’s premier venue.

To see Georgetown’s history firsthand, peruse the immaculate gardens at Tudor Place Historic House or explore the Gardens at Dumbarton Oaks.
